Open Carry: The Right of a Citizen

June 12, 2008 By: Collin Williams Category: Social Stigma 6 Comments →

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms:

Referred to as, “open carry,” by its supporters, a movement of a growing number of gun owners across the U.S. has begun carrying their firearms openly for all the public to see. A recent LA times article focuses on the life of Kevin Jensen, of Provo Utah who recently began wearing his own gun, a Glock 23, openly as he carried out his daily routine.

From shopping at Costco to dropping his daughter off at her elementary school, Jensen [28] proudly wears his firearm in hopes of educating the people that it is not only officers who wear guns, but is indeed the right of every citizen. But more importantly, as he says, “I’m not going to hide in the corner of a school or mall and wait for the shooting to stop.”

However, the law enforcers are not always quite so well educated on the law. Later in the same article, a man simply referred to as “Deveraux,” has reported been stopped many times by police. In one instance, while walking through his neighborhood a Police officer pulled up his cruiser and held Deveraux at gunpoint, threatening to kill him. Deveraux was cuffed, disarmed, and detained by 8 officers in the end before he managed to convince them that they had no legal reason to detain him.

Gun toting at a restaurant:

Last may the Washington Times reported on a story of a Virginia man declaring at a restaurant openly that he was armed and so were dozens of other patrons. The armed customers stood up in unison to show off their holstered firearms. The man, Bruce Jackson, said a few words about the right to bear arms in Virginia, and then they all sat down. The other patrons then went back to their meals, unconcerned.

(These ladies are not the Virginia diners, but actually IDF soldiers from Israel)

The Virginia Citizens Defense League organized the dinner to make the point that wearing guns in public would have little reaction among the people. The demonstration came in response to Democrat, Richard L. Saslaw of the Virginia State Senate who said in a legislative debate, “In most urban areas, you walk into a restaurant with a gun on your hip, they’re going to tell you to get out.” Yet another example of a liberal politician using assumption and innuendo to argue a point while ignoring logic and reason.

Protecting Criminals:

There is a very common misconception among liberal politicians and many citizen groups that infringing upon the right to carry firearms will decrease or prevent gun crimes. Their argument is based on the idea that taking away all of the guns will make it impossible for gun crime to occur, reducing the concept of self defense to whomever has the superior numbers and melee skills. The error in their thinking, which they refuse to recognize, is that when you pass laws to disarm citizens, the only citizens that will obey are the ones who obey the law anyway. The very same citizens who don’t purchase guns illegally and don’t go on shooting rampages.

(Map by opencarry.org. Working version also found there)

The ones who buy guns illegally are criminals who do not respect the law. When gun legislation is passed the criminals benefit because their victims become less able to defend themselves. Gun restriction produces no benefit to law abiding citizens. History is very clear that when citizens are prevented from protecting themselves, governments become more corrupt and criminals more brazen. Gun ban in Australia, gun crime increase. Gun ban in England, gun crime increase. Let’s not become like them.

Girl (13) lands 2nd man behind bars with misleading myspace

June 03, 2008 By: Collin Williams Category: Social Stigma No Comments →

Underage predator:

A 13 year old girl in Florida puts a second man behind bars with her misleading internet persona. Alisha Dean, of Orange County, Florida has a Myspace profile that depicts a 19 year old, “divorced” girl. Her latest victim, Morris Williams, 22 found her profile and after a few conversations met her to engaged in sexual relations. When he had heard that she was indeed not 18, he went to the girl’s father. Jerry Dean confessed that his daughter was 13.

This is the second time Alisha’s myspace profile put a man in jail. The first was 24 year old Darwin Mills, back in January of 2007. Dean’s family admits that they knew about the girl’s myspace page and that she stays out late. Jerry Dean’s excuse for his terrible parenting is quoted as, “One of the reasons for the law is the fact that minors have poor judgment.” Apparently they also have fathers with non-existent parenting skills. Morris William’s step father, Henry Smith is quoted as saying, “I guess we just sit back and count how many after this;” Which is about all we can do under law.

For those interested:

Alisha Dean’s Facebook

Bad parenting is not a crime, and apparently neither is misrepresenting yourself to entice someone to commit a crime. The surprising part is that Alisha’s parents do not seem shocked. For them, it is par for the course. The lesson here is bad parents are always looking for someone to blame other than themselves, that it is important to not trust people you do not know (especially on the internet), and that the law will always be used as a tool against you whenever possible. Remember, there are some 4000 Federal laws (with new ones being created all the time) and, depending on the state, some 30,000 state laws.

There are more subtleties of law than any one person can know in a lifetime.
Ignorance is not a defense.
Judges are subjective “interpreters of the law.”
Many laws are designed for the average citizen to break regularly.

Welcome to the “land of the free.”

Rejecting Society Image Standards

May 21, 2008 By: Collin Williams Category: Humor, Social Stigma 13 Comments →

Health and wellness:

The general societal acceptance of mass media marketing (specifically, of food) and the general acceptance of the level of health-content in the fast food industry goes a long way to explain why many Americans are overweight. It is important to ignore society’s expectations of body image too (which causes depression, unhealthy use of diet pills, starvation, and extreme self-esteem problems). Between the camps of “You have to be model-thin” and “You are fine the way you are” is the rational, smart answer of “Do healthy things that will increase the quality and length of your life.” Improving your self image is great for your self worth, but your mind and individualism are threatened the minute you subvert your own opinion of yourself for the opinions of others.

I don’t trust this food label:

I hate the rules of society and I’ve always been a bit of a sociopath. In my own self interest I sought out the best way to increase my quality of life, specifically my health. Now, I always check the food label:

While I suspected carrots were very good for me, it turns out they are loaded with hidden “Saturated Fat” and “Cholesterol”. Look at those stats! 0 grams of fat = 20%? I am so confused. If this label is so outrageously incorrect, how can I ever trust any food label, ever? That is a pretty liberal definition of the word “Facts” too.

Dangerous food:

While the carrot label error is funny, this is most definitely NOT funny: The Hungry Man “All Day” Breakfast by Swanson.

All Day Breakfast? Is that how long it takes you to eat it? How long you will be vomiting? Or the amount of time you have left to live after you consume it? 1lb… isn’t that a lot of food?

What this man is referring to is a heart attack in-a-box. You would think that the American people would be wise to marketing like this. Eat what he ate, and get what he got… a high percentage of body fat.

231% Cholesterol?! Are you kidding? I have never seen a box of food admit that it is trying to murder you, until now. I cannot believe that anybody would eat this. For more surprises on nutrition information visit your favorite fast food restaurant’s website and look up their nutrition information. You may be shocked (Think 6-Dollar Burger).

For more information on the “Hungry Man All Day Breakfast” there is a hilarious article on X-Entertainment, it’s a little dated but a great read.

Better living:

I recommend “The Abs Diet” Book by David Zinczenko of Men’s Health Magazine. It is not a diet so much as guidelines to eating healthy and helping your body with it’s natural ability to burn fat. It is extremely effective, and definitely worth checking out if you want to be healthy; It is incredibly easy to follow. Also, read his article on the 2,310 Calorie Heath Bar Shake from Baskin Robbin’s.

Live above the mainstream, take back your mind, and reject society.

Shrillary is finished

May 09, 2008 By: Collin Williams Category: Politics, Social Stigma No Comments →

Cheap shot at Hillary

Random thoughts today:

Shrillary needs an exit strategy! For someone who yells and screams about how we need to get out of Iraq, she sure has a lot of trouble pulling out of things. She lost. She is done. But she just won’t go away. Whatever her political move is here; whether it be to have a platform to run in 2012, maybe steal the election via super delegates, or just to be annoying, one thing is clear: She is absolutely NOT serving the people of New York during her term as Senator. I am not sure how anyone even could be a senator while they are running for another office. Senators should be limited to the senate… once someone chooses their branch of government that is where they ought to stay (at the very least, while they still hold that office). Have you ever seen those pictures of sitting there board during session? Other than demanding earmarks in droves, what has she accomplished? She is so unlikable and constantly lies, so why are people still voting for her? Why are people voting for any of these Presidential Clowns? Not one of them will do a responsible job. But then again, the masses are watching TV to get their news, so what else should I expect?

Hillary Bored

That new Esquire Magazine article about the “75 Skills Every Man Should Master” is pretty dumb. Granted, I can see how some of those things can be practical, and 90% of them are things right out of a James Bond movie (which could increase your “cool factor” at a party). But it is just another social stigma thing which I reject entirely on that premise. Also, is it me or does the author write like an epileptic at a rave? The first sentence for example: “75 Skills Every Man Should Master: A man can be an expert at nothing…” Uh huh… so I should “master” these 75 skills (which by the way includes: “Be Loyal” which is not a skill) but simultaneously can be an expert at nothing. So I need to go from Novice to Master and skip Expert? How am I going to accomplish that? Maybe Esquire has a time machine I can use… (try to make that make sense). While self improvement is a fine thing, acceptance of social stigma gives authority of your life to the whim of corporate magazines and the masses. So good luck with that.

Oil field

These are from the Georgia Public Policy Foundation’s Friday Facts:

- Who is “Big Oil”? A study found that 98.5 percent of oil company stock is owned by some combination of individual investors and managed investment vehicles, like mutual and pension funds. Only 1.5 percent is owned by big oil company insiders such as board members. A targeted tax hike, even toward politically convenient oil companies, will ultimately mean a one-two punch to middle-class pocketbooks already softened up by a slowing economy. Source: National Taxpayers Union

- Dumb and Dumber: The House Financial Services Committee voted 38-26 in favor of $15 billion in loans and grants to local governments to facilitate buying foreclosed homes. The bill is part of a larger congressional effort to fix the housing mess. The $15 billion would be dispensed to states according to their portion of nationwide foreclosures. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) dissented, saying, “I don’t think we ought to be incentivizing foreclosure.” Or, as James Madison, author of the Constitution, put it: “I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on the objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” Source: PatriotPost.US
