Open Carry: The Right of a Citizen
The Right to Keep and Bear Arms:
Referred to as, “open carry,” by its supporters, a movement of a growing number of gun owners across the U.S. has begun carrying their firearms openly for all the public to see. A recent LA times article focuses on the life of Kevin Jensen, of Provo Utah who recently began wearing his own gun, a Glock 23, openly as he carried out his daily routine.
From shopping at Costco to dropping his daughter off at her elementary school, Jensen [28] proudly wears his firearm in hopes of educating the people that it is not only officers who wear guns, but is indeed the right of every citizen. But more importantly, as he says, “I’m not going to hide in the corner of a school or mall and wait for the shooting to stop.”
However, the law enforcers are not always quite so well educated on the law. Later in the same article, a man simply referred to as “Deveraux,” has reported been stopped many times by police. In one instance, while walking through his neighborhood a Police officer pulled up his cruiser and held Deveraux at gunpoint, threatening to kill him. Deveraux was cuffed, disarmed, and detained by 8 officers in the end before he managed to convince them that they had no legal reason to detain him.
Gun toting at a restaurant:
Last may the Washington Times reported on a story of a Virginia man declaring at a restaurant openly that he was armed and so were dozens of other patrons. The armed customers stood up in unison to show off their holstered firearms. The man, Bruce Jackson, said a few words about the right to bear arms in Virginia, and then they all sat down. The other patrons then went back to their meals, unconcerned.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League organized the dinner to make the point that wearing guns in public would have little reaction among the people. The demonstration came in response to Democrat, Richard L. Saslaw of the Virginia State Senate who said in a legislative debate, “In most urban areas, you walk into a restaurant with a gun on your hip, they’re going to tell you to get out.” Yet another example of a liberal politician using assumption and innuendo to argue a point while ignoring logic and reason.
Protecting Criminals:
There is a very common misconception among liberal politicians and many citizen groups that infringing upon the right to carry firearms will decrease or prevent gun crimes. Their argument is based on the idea that taking away all of the guns will make it impossible for gun crime to occur, reducing the concept of self defense to whomever has the superior numbers and melee skills. The error in their thinking, which they refuse to recognize, is that when you pass laws to disarm citizens, the only citizens that will obey are the ones who obey the law anyway. The very same citizens who don’t purchase guns illegally and don’t go on shooting rampages.

The ones who buy guns illegally are criminals who do not respect the law. When gun legislation is passed the criminals benefit because their victims become less able to defend themselves. Gun restriction produces no benefit to law abiding citizens. History is very clear that when citizens are prevented from protecting themselves, governments become more corrupt and criminals more brazen. Gun ban in Australia, gun crime increase. Gun ban in England, gun crime increase. Let’s not become like them.
